Writers: The Truth About Advertising, Publicity, and PR

June 13th, 2008

Many of us are trying to do business and don’t know how to define these words. We read articles and think, this could have just as easily been about me! We wonder why the reporter picked that person instead. We wonder how someone got into magazines and onto radio shows. We attribute big successes with an expensive publicist. We are not sure what a publicist does but since the guy on Entourage has one, they must be a good thing. Some of use have publicist and secretly wonder why they can’t get us on the Today Show or Good Morning America. We have written books and wonder why we are not on the Oprah book club/

Advertising is something you pay for. Most of the time you have to come up with the content or copy. You need to hire a copywriter or take some training. There is more to getting people’s attention than a goofy picture. Advertising must be effective and have a call to action. You are asking the people to do something and they must be clear on what to do. Advertising has laws on what you can show and say. FCC rules in advertising will not apply to satellite radio, which is why Howard Stern is leaving regular radio. More and more people are choosing to keep out a lot of advertising by using pod casting and personalizing their media intake. Cell phone use to watch TV and communicate with people can make Generation X unreachable. Advertising is also so overbearing that people can tune it out if it does not directly speak to them.

Writers must promote their book, even if they are published by large publishers. They must create a campaign that is book effective and within budget. Publicity and PR stretch those advertising dollars.

Your MLM Is Not Making Money Because You’re Not Using Common Sense!

June 6th, 2008

It was a great plan. A company will employ a sales force of satisfied customers that will in turn recommend a product to their friends and family. For doing so, they will be compensated with a discount in price or receive a commission for the products that the people in their “network” purchase, based on their “marketing” efforts.

It was a win-win for everyone. The customer won because he received a discount on a quality product that he was already using. Plus he was paid for recommending these products to his friends. The company won because it did not have to spend countless dollars on monstrous ad campaigns. It did not have the headache of maintaining a salaried sales force. And finally paid money AFTER a sale was made. It sounded like the perfect system.

But then along came the charlatans and scammers that gave the industry a black eye. These people and companies tarnished the promise of network marketing, turning mlm into a four letter word.

Now the entire industry is topsy turvey. Companies and senior uplines simply focus on recruiting. They tell you that it is all a numbers game and that you just have to plug more people into the system. It is all about your warm market and your warm market’s warm market. Leaders sit in training meeting and conferences telling you to find more people. “Go wide.” “Go Deep.” There is a huge focus on building your network… but what about the marketing.

Ignoring the marketing aspect of your business is like lifting weights with your right arm while ignoring your left. It just doesn’t make sense. It creates an imbalance, and this misalignment in network marketing’s Feng-Shui, I’m convinced, is the reason that most people are failing in this industry. This strategy violates the motivations that created the industry and just does not make common sense.

You must market you product. If you represent a product that you would not buy if there wasn’t some financial compensation tied to it… find a new product! Then market the hell out of it. Find customers that are happy with the product. This will accomplish two things. It will put money in your pocket quickly (the reason you got into business in the first place). And it will provide you with a happy customer that will be more than willing to introduce this product to his friends and family. This person will be more open to becoming part of your downline, thus providing you with residual income (which is why we chose network marketing as our business)

I am not saying that you should ignore the recruiting aspect of your business. I am telling you to balance the scales. Thus, you will have achieved harmony in the yin-yang of your network marketing universe. With a evenhanded approach you will have more upfront income, from your marketing efforts. And with happy customers instead of “perpetual opportunity seekers” in your downline, they are more likely to stay in the business instead of hoping into the next big opportunity.

Graphic Design, Direct Response Ads - Make Your Ad Jump Off The Page in 3 Easy Steps

June 5th, 2008

Step #1: Keep The Message Clear.

Despite what some have been led to believe, no-one is in the business of spending a fortune to sell acres of white space or pretty pictures to art-starved consumers.

Your mission is to make a sale.

Don’t cut sales copy for massive margins, vast areas of empty “white space” or ponderous photographs. You’re just asking for trouble and, quite possibly, you could blow the sale.

Step #2: Great artwork doesn’t always sell.

This isn’t about art. It’s about business. Specifically, it’s about selling a product or service.

Art is subjective. Certain techniques have been proven over many years to be more effective at generating attention, readership and response than others.

The first lesson that great designers have learned is that design does NOT sell products. Copy sells the product. Great design helps the copy do its job. Bad design gets in the way of the sale.

You only have a limited amount of space in each promotion. Every element that gets through to final draft displaces something that didn’t.

Every unnecessary graphic element you add means crucial sales copy has to be smaller, shorter - or worse, cut altogether.
That means you sell less. Bottom line.

Step #3: Recognize that your design only has to accomplish two, simple but essential tasks.

Graphic designers’ first job is to help the copy grab the prospect’s attention. Do this one thing well - and yes, that usually means big, “ugly” headline and deck type - and you’re 60% of the way there.

Their second job is to convert that attention to readership and to help keep the prospect reading until he responds.

Do these 3 simple things well, and you’ll create more responsive ads and bigger winners, more often!

Free MLM Leads Forever - Never Pay Again

June 3rd, 2008

Free MLM Leads. So what’s the big Secret? Free MLM leads come from your web site.

What if your web site was on the front page of Google? Would that get free MLM leads for you and your down line? Well guess what. It can be! If you’re thinking, “Ya, sure! That’s impossible for me.” You won’t think so in about three minutes.

The big Free MLM lead secret

Getting a steady flow of targeted free MLM leads is possible for the average person with the key words on your web site in niche markets. If you’re in MLM for the long haul; this is the way to go. It’s not going to be easy at first, but this is how you really can generate free MLM leads.

Build your own web site

Free MLM leads will come when you build your own site. You will need an HLTM editor program and a good web hosting service to put your site on. I’ll tell you about where you can get a quality HTML editor free in a moment.

Find your niche markets and you’re on the way to Free MLM leads

This is where your niche markets come into the picture. Key words you place on your web site are what free MLM leads come from. Just think of possible ways that people would look for your product and use a little imagination. Think of ways that you think that people will search for your product and write down the search phrases that look good to you. Good niche market phrases are ones that search engines show less than 1,000,000 sites using that particular phrase. You will see the number of sites using the phrase at the top of your search list on the right beside the word “Results”.

Getting Free leads means it’s time to “Key Word Optimize” your web site

When your site is “Key Word Optimized” well enough it will be one of the first sites that will be shown on a result search. All you need now are tools to work with. Here are three programs that you can download free.

Good Keywords- This is a program that will tell you how many times a key word has been searched for during the previous month. If you know how many people are looking for the search you pick, you’ll know if it’s a good potential niche market for free MLM leads. If you see thousands of searches don’t use that word or phrase. Try a smaller market where there is less competition for the word so it will be easier to get to the top of the search. If you try to use a search phase that is competing with 59,000,000 sites and was searched for 10,000 times last month, that’s not a good niche. It’s simple. Just use common sense.

Nvu - A quality HTML editor program you can download free to build your site with.

Web Position- This program will tell you how to place your key words on your site so the search engines will pick it up and put your site on the front page. It has a 30-Day free trial.

You will also need a web hosting company to put your site on. Quality web hosing is unfortunately, not free.

The Top Five magic spots

If your site is in the top five site search results listed, people will visit it. The first five sites people see when they search for anything are the most common sites visited. People punching searches into their browser ARE most likely LOOKING to buy. There’s a very good chance that they will opt into your site or call you for more information about you product. Now you have an extremely targeted free MLM lead! It doesn’t take many leads of this quality level to make sales.

Getting free MLM leads with your web site is work that takes practice but in the long run, it’s worth learning.

Give Them Something Useful - A Small Business Marketing Tip

June 3rd, 2008

Naturally my wife wanted a new Burberry purse when my father in law asked her what she wanted him to pick up in Europe. She’s all about purses. He bought her a beautiful purse in Rome and sent it to her when he got back in the States.

Along with the bag, there was a card-stock envelope containing the receipt and something very interesting - a map of Rome. It was one of those little tourist maps and it had all the Burberry stores in Rome marked off so you could find them.

Absolutely brilliant. First the map is useful, a great marketing tool is something people will keep around. This is why magazine advertising is so effective. It’s also something you might pass on to people you know who are traveling to Rome - and now they’ll know where to get a nice purse just like yours. Also, while you are in Rome you might just decide to pick up a second purse for Aunt Clara and now you can find your way back to a shop.

Companies of all sizes have used giveaways in marketing forever. Gillette had the brilliant idea of giving razors away, and then charging for disposable blades which you had to throw away frequently. Cracker Jacks are known for the toy surprise inside. Food vendors give away free samples to get you to buy more.

The psychological urge to reciprocate when somebody gives us something is so strong that Cialdini wrote about it in his seminal book on Influence. That urge is stronger the more valuable the giveaway. Reciprocity is not the only factor that can make giveaways useful small business marketing tools.

Some of the features of great giveaways:

-They are tools or information that customers will use repeatedly
-They have a positive emotional component
-They can be passed along to others building the marketing effect
-The benefit of the giveaway is overt
-The giveaway builds a strong mental link to your business
-The giveaway helps the customer buy from you.

I personally believe that well-tailored informational products are probably the best giveaway ever. Kraft foods sends out a free monthly magazine full of recipes (all using Kraft foods). That giveaway has all of the above features. So does the tourist map of Rome.

If you’re in business in 2005 you need to take small business Internet marketing very seriously. The Internet is a great medium for giving away information products. If you run a lawn care business, maybe you have a printable planting calendar on your web site. If you own a restaurant near a theater district, maybe you publish a calendar of upcoming shows with your phone number for pre-theater reservations.

I love to go to conventions and walk the floor with a bag picking up tons of free stuff. Honestly, most of it goes right in the trash. I keep pens and other useful stuff, but who has time to look through 500 company brochures? While they are cute, wacky toys and stress relief pillows just clutter up my office. That stuff is very expensive, and I think the marketing value is very small.

This year I went to the Boston wine expo - two days of drinking wine! Some pear grower’s association was there giving out samples of pears. Their giveaway was a cardboard wheel that you could use to match a varieties of pears with a types of wine and types of cheeses. This is particularly useful if you are a chef looking for ways to put a menu together.

My friend who owns a car repair shop is pricing out travel mugs. This is a pretty good giveaway. Ideally, when people have car trouble they’ll have their coffee with his phone number on it in front of them.

What can you give away that is useful? It may just be information in a form that costs you nothing, or it might be a something you budget for. Remember the list of features when you look at your giveaways.

How To Get Your Novel Noticed By An Agent

June 2nd, 2008

All aspiring novelists know how hard it is to get an agent these days. It seems impossible when it’s obvious you have to be a celebrity before you can get anywhere near getting published. Don’t give up just yet though. There are some easy steps to take to make your writing dream come true.

The first thing you must do before sending your work to an agent is to make sure that your first few pages are your very best. Don’t just send out an early draft hoping that some agent is likely to see its potential. It doesn’t work like that. Well, not any more, anyway. You have to realise that you need to get your work to a high standard and to do that you must edit and rewrite many times. I’m afraid that’s what being a writer is all about. There is plenty of information available on the Internet that will help you learn how to edit, as well as many good books on the subject.

As you edit make sure that your work flows and delete anything you’re unsure about. Reading your work out loud helps as you will be able to hear what works and what doesn’t. Check for any spelling errors. It’s best to print your work first as editing on screen can cause you to miss a few things (don’t just rely on your computer spell checker to do it for you).

Is your main character interesting and likeable? To engage a reader or agent you have to create a memorable character, someone with whom the reader can identify in some way and who will make them want to read on. Also, try not to include too many characters in the opening chapter as it can get confusing for the reader.

The next thing to look at is your narrative. Is there too much of it? There should be the perfect balance between dialogue, description and narrative. Long descriptions might have been all right for Charles Dickens’ readers but it will certainly bore today’s reader as people lead busy, stressful lives and don’t have much time to read. Read how other contemporary writers use description and learn from them.

Each scene must move the plot forward. Scenes where nothing much is happening to do with plot shouldn’t be in there so take it out now or it will kill the pace.

The last thing you must do is check that you are presenting your manuscript in a professional way. That is with at least an inch margin all round with double spaced text on good quality white printing paper. Use an A4 envelope and always include an SAE with the correct postage.

Good luck.

Link Building Methods

May 25th, 2008

Linking brings qualified prospects to your website, boosts search engine rankings, establishes value and trust in your brand, gives you a competitive advantage and establishes you in the virtual marketplace.

A couple of years ago Link Exchange was quite new and an excellent place for savvy webmasters to exchange quality links with those who were like-minded. Many Link Exchanges, mostly based on the original few, have sprung up promising an unending stream of reciprocal links with as many sites as you dare dream. There’s no problem with this however, link trades, where you put my link on your site and I put your link on my site may be less valuable than a one-way link these days after the Jagger Update.

For Instance getting Inbound links to your site (IBL) has become more important to achieve high rankings in Google than it originally was. You can build and establish one way links from blogs, news sites, directories, ezines, product reviewers, partner sites and so on.

Some of the popular Link Building Methods are listed below -

Link from non commercial sites - Links from .edu and .org websites are good for increasing your site’s rankings and are more important than ever.

Article Links - Links from the author by-line or within the article that point back to your site will positively affect your rankings.

Link from established sites - If your site is referred from big behemoth site like Wikipedia, Yahoo, AOL, Ebay, Amazon, etc., you will rank better than you did before Jagger.

Avoid Link Farms - Link farms are sites that exist solely to link to other web sites. Google in particular has been known to ban sites found using a link farm, stay away from them.

Relevant Links - IBL (inbound links) and OBL (outbound links) relevancy is more important after Jagger. This means that if you point to related sites or you get links from other sites that are related to your website, you may rank better after Jagger.

Use Link Bait - Although the term “link bait” is fairly new, the entire concept of link bait has been around as long as the internet itself. People have been creating controversial, funny, and informative web sites and web site content that others naturally link to.

Post messages on forums - Post messages on related forums , make sure they are readable by seach engine, while some of them have no-index attribute on their page.

Social Sites - Some free host sites also allow you to create pages on their sites which may help leverage the authority of their domains.

Obtain Links from Media Sites - Media sites have large audiences of people looking for information - get coverage and a link to your site. This would not only get a significant spike in traffic to our site but also get a percentage of that audience linking to us because the media site did. Links attract links.

Publish Press Releases - Publish any new event or newly introduced service/product in press releases directories.

Submit Tips - Post quality tips on other web sites in the area of expertise, at the bottom of each tip, include two lines about your products/services, and a link to your website.

Submit Reviews - Review different products or services and post about our good/bad experience with the product, service or company on other sites. eg. ‘review’, ‘price comparison’ etc. At the bottom of the review, include a few lines of text about you with a link to your website.

Publish whitepapers - Throughout the whitepaper, include references to our products or services with a link to your website. In addition, make sure you let our readers know they may freely distribute the document. Place a link to your whitepaper on our website to enable our visitors to download it. Submit whitepaper on other sites.

Publish Ebooks - Throughout the e-book, include references to your products or services with a link to your website. In addition, make sure you let your readers know they may freely distribute the ebook. Place a link to your ebook on your website to enable your visitors to download it. Submit ebooks on other sites.

Profile Pages - MSN’s Small Business Directory allows you to create a company profile page and get listed in other profile pages.

Good inbound links can always move your page up the ranking ladder and act as new entry points to your site.
The best way to carry link building is by obtaining natural links pointing to your site from a variety of related websites, some .org’s and .edu’s, and from other trusted authority sites.

Always remember what the original purpose for linking was and why it was practiced and why incoming links were, and still are, valued by the Search Engines. A link from a related site is a ‘vote of confidence’ that they feel their visitors will benefit from your content and hence, evidence that your website is considered to be of value in a specific category.
Link popularity is important and link building process needs to be given high priority. A little time spent on Link building today will ensure a good search engine ranking for your site in the future.
