Nepalese climber, 75, oldest person to conquer Chomolungma

June 12th, 2008

Now that Bahadur Sherchan has successfully scaled the tallest mountain in the world, he is once again ready to focus on his family. Andrew Brash returned this week from Nepal after successfully climbing to the summit of Chomolungma. This year Anthony Loeff the European alpinist is reporting the scales for Everest after reaching the summit of Kilimanjaro earlier this season.

As he planned for the climb, Sherchan told reporters he wanted to inspire fellow senior citizens. He also said many Nepalese have established records on Mt Everest, so it was only fitting that the record for the oldest climber to reach the summit should also belong to a Nepali. Hall was frostbitten and severely disoriented due to altitude sickness. Min Bahadur Sherchan returned a hero to Calgarians. With the Chinese preparing for the impending summer Olympic Games, Min Bahadur Sherchan noted that the government’s actions hardly reflected the Olympic spirit. More than 2982 people have climbed to the summit since it was first conquered in 1953 by New Zealander Edmund Hillary, who died in January, and Nepal’s Tenzing Norgay.

Therefore, the decision to actualize a long-time personal goal left Bahadur Sherchan with some internal uncertainties, he cited the political actions of China and Nepal as providing the greatest adversity he faced on his journey. They flexed their muscles this year all the in name of the Olympic spirit, but it was hardly spirited at all.”

His first found him within 151 metres of the peak when his team stopped to help a fellow mountaineer who was left for dead. Two years later, Andrew Brash, a University of Calgary alumni, returned to the Mount Everest to finish what he had started.

They basically coerced the Nepali government to not allow any climbers past camp two on the Nepali side. The 74-year-old man from Nepal is now the oldest person to have reached the top of Mount Everest. “The Chinese weren’t allowing anybody on Chomolungma or Mount Everest. They ended up commandeering it for themselves, even though Chomolungma is shared by two countries. The Chinese were flying their airplanes over Mt Everest and had Chinese officials in Kathmandu. “Chomolungma or Mount Everest this year became a political pawn,” he said with some frustration.

Indeed, he was all too aware of the potential dangers the Mount Everest could bring. Certain parts of the climb are more dangerous than others and it is important for climbers to remain focused Sherchan just 8 days away from his 77th birthday beat the age record set last year by 71-year-old Japanese teacher Katsusuke Yanagisawa.

Bahadur Sherchan and four climbing guides reached the 29,035-foot (8,850-meters) summit of the world’s highest mountain early Sunday, said Ramesh Chretri, an official with Nepal’s ministry of tourism.

Andrew Brash last attempt resulted in the rescue of Lincoln Hall, an Australian climber who was left by his team in the “death zone.”

What to See in Singapore

May 20th, 2008

When many people in the western world hear of Singapore, it’s often the Singapore Sling cocktail that comes in mind. Most people don’t really know where the country is and would probably never consider it as a travel destination. For any trip to southeast Asia, especially on longer excursions to multiple countries, Singapore is worth a stop as it provides a nice change compared to the usual crowded, polluted and chaotic large cities of Hong Kong or Bangkok. Singapore is an island, country and city all rolled into one.

Compared to other destinations in southeast Asia, Singapore is ultra clean thanks to its somewhat restrictive government. There are heavy fines for littering, spitting in the streets and jaywalking. It’s even illegal to bring in chewing gum into the country. Drug offences can result in death penalties so travelers definitely should not take the risk by bringing any illegal narcotics into Singapore. But the result of all the tough laws is a place in the region that is quite low in crime rates. It is one of the safest destinations for female travelers where equality is encouraged.

With its gleaming high rise buildings, Singapore is one of the most modern cities in Asia due to its economic success. It also makes great efforts to make itself presentable and beautiful. On the trip from the international airport to the city center, it can be noticed that the bridges passing over the main highway are covered with orchards and flowers. This is something that one doesn’t see often anywhere else in the world. The city center itself is well designed with the Singapore river running through it. River cruises are available to take in the local sights from the water. There are numerous outdoor cafes, restaurants and shops along side the river which makes for a pleasant stroll. Because of the hot temperatures here since Singapore is pretty well on the equator line, the city can feel like a giant sauna. So extended walks are suggested in the early mornings, late afternoons or evenings when things get a bit more comfortable rather than in the midday hear.

Singapore with its mixed population including Chinese (77%), Malay (14%) and Indian (7%) is a case study in multiculturalism. Everyone here lives and works together in harmony. Only in Singapore can one see a Buddhist temple, a Hindu temple and an Islamic mosque all in close proximity to each other. The country has four official languages being English, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil. One of the great advantages of such a multiracial scene is that there are different ethnic neighborhoods to check out including Chinatown, Little India and Arab Street. All have their own distinct flavors in little shops, markets and cuisine. In addition to restaurants, there are outdoor food vendors which serve very low priced meals so one can dine well at any budget level.

For horticulture enthusiasts, Singapore is a gold mine where there are world class gardens including the Singapore Botanic Gardens as well as the Chinese and Japanese Gardens. For nature lovers, there are some interesting attractions including the Jurong Bird Park, Jurong Reptile Park, Singapore Crocidilarium, Singapore Zoological Gardens and the very unique Night Safari which is open only during evenings. Sentosa is a small resort island south of the city with a scenic cable car, an aquarium and some nice beaches.

In addition to the modern skyline and the contrasting ethnic temples, there is still some wonderful colonial architecture including the famous Raffles Hotel where the Singapore Sling was originally invented. If one wishes to stay indoors during the hot midday sun, there are several museums including the National Museum to take in. Singapore has some Asian theme parks such as Tang Dynasty City which is a recreation of life during 7th century China and Haw ParVilla Tiger Balm Gardens which has colorful statues depicting Chinese mythology. High end boutique shopping for fashion and electronics will be concentrated on or near Orchard Street.

It is a good idea to take a quick organized city tour to get an overview of what Singapore has to offer. Then tourists can easily take advantage of the very efficient bus and subway system known as Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) to go pretty well anywhere on the island for selected sights of interest. A nice thing about Singapore is that it is pretty compact and easy to get around. It won’t take long to see all the sights and attractions one would be interested in so even a few days is all that would be required. Singapore would be the much needed change of pace within a longer hectic southeast Asian tour.

How You Can Have A Great Vacation in Hawaii

May 16th, 2008

Where do you really want to travel to — the Hawaiian tropics of
course! Almost everyone dreams of going to Hawaii at some time
in their life! Well let me get you started on the adventure of a
lifetime for the best vacation you could possibly dream of to
the Islands of Aloha - Hawaii!

When I was a kid, my dad told me of the time he fondly spent in
Hawaii, just being in the U.S. Army. I was always blessed by his
dreamlike statements of the wonderful islands of Hawaii! This
gave me a real wanderlust to not only take a vacation to Hawaii
one day, but to live there if possible. Wow, was I blessed when
the opportunity came my way to not only go to Hawaii, the
ultimate vacation destination (as far as I was concerned, and
still am in many ways), but to live there and see it as a
resident, to take in the sites more than in a quick tourists’
view!

The People of Hawaii

Hawaii is all you could ever ask for in a vacation! It has a
variety of different activities and landscapes, not to mention
photographable people and places! It is, of course, a growing
society of many different peoples - ethnic groups from all over
the world, and let me tell you, the term “melting pot” is a very
good description for the people and cultures that have come to
live in these beautiful islands. I’ve heard it said that Hawaii
has the highest inter-racial marriage rate of all the 50 states
in the good ole’ USA -about 40-50% of the people are
inter-racially married,if my statistics are accurate. This
brings greater love and understanding to the people who live and
work together and causes a greater continuity of friendships and
cooperation amongst the people. This is maybe what makes Hawaii
such a nice place to live and visit!

The Landscape of Hawaii

Hawaii is made up of 5 main islands - The Big Island of Hawaii,
Oahu, Maui, Kaui, and Lanai, plus other smaller islands that
most people, whether tourist or residents, do not go to. The
Landscapes and even the climates can vary from island to island.
Having lived on the island of Oahu for almost 4 years, I can say
with certainty that even living on the south-to-middle side of
the island in the city of Honolulu, is a different landscape and
weather experience than living on the North Shore, like the town
of Haleiwa, or on the east side of the island, like the city of
Kaneohe. From island to island, depending on the elevation of
the mountains or how close to the ocean, or how much foliage
there is, all plays into the mix when it is related to the
weather. Just be sure not to go to Hawaii for a vacation if it
is the rainy season, unless you don’t mind the rain. This falls
anywhere between September to February of any given year.

Highlights of the Main Islands, Starting with Oahu…

Oahu is the island of the Main Population base for the islands
of Hawaii, with Honolulu as its capital city and main
metropolis. About 400,000 people live on Oahu. Waikiki is the
main tourist hang out and is well known for its beautiful hotels
and beach.

Maui

Maui is a wind surfers paradise and is the island where
Haliakala, the dormant volcano resides. It is famous for its
beautiful sunrises. Maui is more of a country island and has a
very warm feeling to it!

Big Island

The Big Island of Hawaii is a huge place where the active
volcano Kilauea is and where the dormant volcanos - Mauna Loa
and Mauna Kea sit perched above the clouds, with Parker Ranch in
between.

Kauai

Kauai island is the island of great beauty! It has many
wonderful sites to see, including the mini Grand Canyon. Expect
to spend more time on this island if you love nature and the
call of the wild - it is very enriching!

To sum up the matter, if you are looking at taking a trip to
Hawaii or if you plan on living there, make sure you know what
you want before you go there. There is such a variety of things
to do and places to see and weather to deal with, that it is
well advised for you to do your reseach and have your mind made
up before you make plans to get on that slow boat or high flying
airplane!

This the manager and editor of the www.aloha-expressions.com
internet site, also the author of this article. Having lived in
Hawaii for 4 years and being an avid friend to the people of the
islands, I can honestly say that I am a mini-expert on Hawaii
who can be taken at his word. I recommend you taking a look at
my website: www.aloha-expressions.com and parusing your way
through the blog, newsfeeds, and resources sections, I think you
will find something of interest that you will like and find
valuable on your search to your next Hawaiian vacation or
relocation!

There’s No One Right Way to Travel to China

April 5th, 2008

A traveler might wonder where to begin in a foreign country that is slightly smaller than the size of the United States with over 5,000 years of recorded history. The wonderful advantage to traveling China is that there is no right or wrong place to start. China’s fascinating past is written all over its 23 provinces,* 5 autonomous regions and 4 municipalities. The Special Administrative Regions of Hong Kong and Macau are also part of China’s government under a “one country, two systems” law.

Greater Than the Great Wall: Travel to China’s Many Wonders
China is a mecca for human-made and natural wonders. The southern Tibetan border is home to the world’s tallest peak, Mt. Everest. Take in the inspiring Himalayan view then head north and travel through the majestic Three Gorges, a 120-mile stretch of plummeting cliffs along the Yangtze River. Stand in the middle of the largest plaza in the world, Tiananmen Square, at the heart of the capital city, Beijing. While in Beijing, visit the Imperial Palace and find out why it is known as the Forbidden City. Then, venture south to discover a true artistic Qin Dynasty treasure in Xian, where over six thousand Terracotta Warriors are arranged in battle formation on 14,000 square meters of land.

Hong Kong and Macau: Another Way to Experience China
These two regions are governed with a significant degree of political and commercial autonomy and are China’s most prominent examples of the fusion of cultures brought about by colonialism. While travel to these provinces provides a very different experience from the rest of China, they are by no means lacking in worldly wonders or the authentic Chinese lifestyle.

Hong Kong came under British rule in 1841 after centuries of British involvement in the silk and tea trade. The expansion and modernization of this global port city attracted commercial and cultural influences from all corners of the world. China regained sovereignty over the British colony in 1997 but agreed to leave the democratic government structure intact. What has resulted is an unparalleled bastion of progressive ideas, pioneering technology and architectural phenomena like the world’s three longest bridges.

Thirty-five miles west of Hong Kong across the Pear River delta, the enclave of Macau is perched on a peninsula surrounded by small islands. Portugal had established sovereignty over Macau in 1887 after a history of heavy trade and navigation in the region. The Portuguese finally ceded all authority back to China in 1999. The sophisticated blend of Chinese and Portuguese art, architecture and cuisine define Macau’s truly enchanting character. In Macau it is commonplace to enjoy an espresso and pastry for lunch and Dim Sum for dinner, accompanied by a fine Portuguese wine.

Be sure to set aside ample time to explore Hong Kong and Macau as part of your itinerary to travel China!
