To My Friend: Spring a New Leaf, Synthetic Wigs On Me

I didn’t think the sparkling Caroline Sharp, my high school BFF, might someday own and wear medical wigs. Her terrific hair was synonymous with her attitude. Get this. Our favorite gal is still celebrated for her trademark toss ‘n turn. Very few can tell she dons quality black wigs. It’s not so unusual.

Back in the day as kids growing up in the hill country, we always took turns winning Miss “SCH” four years running. In our twenties her alopecia took its toll and her hair thinned spottily. I mentioned a few lace wigs. Even so she just shaved her head. Even on bad days she somewhat obnoxiously never let you forget about her innate beauty.

Appearing at our alma mater’s baseball championship, we heckled till someone retardedly threw the ball (or however you say it) at us. Quick on her feet, she dove for the ball and her cute little hat landed in a beer, uncovering her naked head. No big deal, she lobbed it playfully back to the field. What’d I tell ya about her spunk?

Of course, everyone has insecurities. Not too long after she invited me over for a stroll to the art gallery, when she sat me down and revealed that she opts to make do with a shorn head as a statement. She would never become dependent on beautiful wigs, despite the fact that she wanted her hair back. She then the punk turned flush red and begged that I dismiss the notion. I had to oblige.

There was no way to get her words out of my head. The next morning, I talked about taking care of this wig problem. Finally we both arrived at the perfect solution: we’d buy each other wigs. We have a knack for making online wig shopping fun.

Not sure who was more stunned by the options. She couldn’t believe that wigs could be very appealing for people, even superstars. These synthetic wigs complimented her natural beauty. I built a completely modern set of outfits around my wig. We do it all together, forever and always. Recently she thanked me for giving her back her hair, and confessed it brought about a feminine mystique for many occasions. It’s encouraging to realize her float about as light as a feather. She’s a better person, with the same confidence.
