You may have heard of Roger von Oech’s book, A Whack on the Side of the Head: How to Unlock Your Mind for Innovation. It’s as much fun to read as its title suggests. It covers the ten common obstacles to creative thinking. It’s about ways in which you can unlock your mind for innovation, for change, for more interest, or even for a career change.

Mr. Von Oech writes about the time when his English teacher in high school put a small chalk dot on the blackboard and asked the class to tell him what it was. A few seconds passed, and then someone said, “It’s a chalk dot on the board.” The rest of the class seemed relieved that the obvious had been stated, and no one else had anything more to say.

“I’m surprised at you,” replied the teacher, “Yesterday I did the same exercise with a group of kindergartners, and they thought of fifty different things the chalk mark could be:

* a cat’s eye, * a cigar butt,

* a star, * a pebble,

* a squashed bug, * a rotten egg,

* a head, * and so on.

The lesson that I wish to share with you is the importance of looking for more than one right answer. When you look, you will be surprised to learn how many answers are available.

We have been trained in school to look only for the first right answer to every problem. The average person does this; the creative person looks for many.

Looking beyond the first solution to a problem can result in a whole new set of serendipitous solutions - solutions that can be a hundred times better than the first one.

Remember: When you maximize your potential, everyone wins. When you don’t, we all lose.

To exceed current capacity and improve muscle strength, a workout should progressively add more weight, sets, or repetitions in a set. It may become necessary to move to a different type of lifting exercise. Those who want to increase strength while minimizing growth of muscle mass should aim for the maximum number or repetitions possible for each weight, rather than trying to lift heavier than anyone else.

Muscle Building Routines

A muscle grows and strengthens when it is pushed beyond its average capacity. Those who want to add muscle quickly will lift heavier and use different techniques to “shock” their bodies into growing muscle. Many people agree that free weights are better suited to building muscle than resistance machines because they force all the muscles to work to support the weight, rather than allowing the machine to help. It is also important to include exercises that target certain areas, such as chest presses, bicep curls, calf raises, or back squats.

Building muscle also requires recovery time for the muscles to adjust. This involves getting the proper nutrition, sleep, and breaks between workouts. Most weight training programs geared at adding mass suggest a recovery time of two or three days in between training sessions. You may decide to do circuit training or cardio exercise in between, but be aware that burning too many calories can limit muscle growth. Many people who have difficulty adding muscle mass are making the mistake of working out too much.

Diet and fat intake can also affect your weight training program and many people consult with a nutritionist before beginning a training program. Building muscle requires different foods than losing weight so avoid frustrating your efforts by getting some informed dietary information before starting.

As with all forms of exercise, it takes a bit of time for results to become obvious. Hopefully you will begin to feel more active, energetic, and happy shortly after beginning your weight training program, but the loss of weight or growth of muscles will take longer. The results can be subtle at first. Take photos or record weight, size and other information before beginning and compare weekly to see your progress more clearly. This will help you realize that change is taking place and you will be more likely to continue with the workout routine.

If you’re planning a wedding or planning on being in one, then the question of wedding speeches is bound to come up.

Who gives the speeches

Well, this is really up to the couple that’s getting married, but there seems to be a normal list of people that are expected to say something.

The wedding party usually has the most members talking about the bride or the groom. The Best Man and Matron or Maid of Honor are the ones that will be giving short speeches before dinner in most cases. Other members of the party can also speak if the couple chooses.

The father of the bride usually gives a speech to the guests, thanking them for coming as well as saying a word or two to the groom. The couple themselves may also want to talk to the guests, giving them thanks and their love.

Of course, the reception isn’t the only place for speeches. Many times, the wedding rehearsal has one or two of the couple’s parents speaking as well.

As many people as the couple wants can speak, but what if you’re the one that’s asked?

Before you stand up

If you’re asked to give a speech, no doubt you’re nervous and at a loss for what to say. The best advice is to keep your speech short and simple, so that your nerves don’t have time to take over and so that your creativity isn’t sapped.

Make a list of all of the things that you admire and love about the couple or half of the couple. If you’ve been friends for a while, you may want to include a joke or a story. The best advice is to keep the story clean thoughtheir parents may not want to know what they’ve done.

Talk about the person and then end with some sort of revelation or note of congratulation. Raise your glass and toast the couple. It’s really as easy as that.

If you’re afraid that you’ll become nervous, make sure that you rehearse the speech often, writing it well in advance. Or you can just focus on your friend as you give the speech and avoid making eye contact out into the reception crowd.

Speeches are a wonderful way to give thanks to the guest and to members of the new couple. Use your heart as a guide, and you’re sure to get it right.

Let me preface this by saying right up front - this is NOT for everyone. The key is that my situation was friendly enough to still communicate with each other after we split. My ex-wife and I agreed that our kids were certainly worth that! And we still have to deal with one another until they are through college. This is offered as a life experience only and not intended as legal advice. As such, this may not apply to you.

After 25 years of marriage, I decided that I did not want to be married to my wife. We had drifted apart and in the last few years, things were getting worse. We had little in common anymore… including friends. By and large, mine were different from hers. She would go away on her weekends and I would go on mine. Other than our children, whom we both love very much, we were just a couple living together. She is still a good woman, just not one I wanted to be married to. There had to be something else… Sound familiar?

As our situation unfolded, she retained an attorney early on and we began negotiations in earnest within a month of separation. Sure we had our differences! But with an open line of communication available, we (her attorney and I) talked out our problems and came to an agreement within a few months.

I felt confident in representing myself after performing a few hours of research on the internet. And you bet, I was prepared to bail out and get an attorney too. But having done the research, nothing that came up was a surprise at all. I was very pleasantly surprised and amazed. I found that many things were already prescribed by statute as being pretty cut and dried. Child support? Maintenance? In NY, where I live, it was a matter of using past incomes to arrive at an appropriate level. The method and level were already set.

When it seemed to be all sorted out, I went to an attorney that a friend recommended highly. He had an offer of the first consultation costing only $50. for a one half hour conference. All I did was take the agreement to him for review. At the consultations conclusion, his exact words were “It seems that you have a pretty good handle on this. If you can get this signed and executed, you don’t need me. Just call me if anything changes.” Frankly I was overwhelmed! I had just saved $3,000. minimum! Money that could be used to put MY kids through college, not his!

I don’t really know how unique my situation was. Hence, I do credit some luck on my part, as I said in the article summary. But it wasn’t difficult.

I have performed a few legal services for myself in the past such as setting up a corporation, partnership, and purchase agreements. I believe that a person of reasonable intelligence can save an incredible amount of money on legal services, if they will do the research and use the preprinted legal forms that so many attorneys use themselves. I had the comfort level that allowed me to proceed beyond what I had anticipated I could. It won’t work for everyone. Certainly, not everyone has that comfort level. It worked for me.
