You watch what you eat. You don’t smoke and you hardly ever have any alcohol. You even get exercise at least three times a week. You are doing everything that you can do to be and stay healthy. But each day you get up and head into the refinery where you work. You laugh with coworkers and move at a steady pace, making sure you get all your work done. Like most of us you assume that your work environment is safe. But it isn’t. Benzene and AML affect your workplace, and you don’t even know it.

Benzene is nasty. And, unfortunately, commonly used. Classified as a first class carcinogen, benzene is used in a variety of products and in the production of certain goods, and if you work at a refinery that is in operation, there is a very good chance that you are being exposed to it. And there is a direct link between benzene and AML. If you work at a refinery, or any factory where paint, rubber or plastic is being produced, you may be at risk.

AML is short for acute myelogenous leukemia, a deadly form of cancer. And AML is just one of several serious illnesses that you can get from working with and breathing in benzene. AML is cancer of the blood and bone marrow and can be terminal if not treated.
Symptoms can appear flu like so if you have any concerns, you should go see your doctor. Cancer is not something you want to wait on. If you do indeed work around benzene, even if you aren’t showing symptoms, you may want to be checked out by a doctor.

And companies may not tell you what you are working with, so ask! Benzene and AML is something that you would think responsible companies would tell their workers about, but sometimes it’s all about money. Imagine that. But there are more and more lawsuit regarding Benzene and AML, so maybe companies will smarten up and find an alternative to using benzene. Until, then, be smart and make sure you know what chemicals you are breathing in while working. Don’t depend on your company to be up front.

It would be nice for the Department of Transportation, Large Trucking Companies, and infrastructure planners to have more data on the flow of transportation in this great nation. We need a Nationwide Truck Traffic Transponder Satellite System, which would track every over-the-road truck and we need to model this super system after the current FAA air traffic control system. The benefits to such a system will be immense and also prevent traffic congestion thru GPS re-routing and warning of traffic bottlenecks. We can carefully determine those areas which need road or highway modification to take the extra number of trucks.

You see everything we buy was brought in part or at least some of the way by truck. Everything you see which was built; every building, block wall, and concrete parking lot and all the materials used came by truck too. Brian Kilcommons relates a terrible story about a beautiful golden retriever dog who was usually very gentle and kind with children. It’s owners had a girl aged 3 1/2, and they normally got along very well. Then one day the little girl grabbed the dog’s ear. It snarled and bit her face. She needed 47 stitches in her face, and they put the dog down. The parents had the dog euthanized without bothering to find out what had caused this sudden change in their dog’s behaviour. The vet, however, did an autopsy, and found our that this dog was suffering not one but two severe ear infections that were incredibly painful.

Ear infections usually start out mild, and in the outer ear. This dog’s health was effectively neglected by it’s owners. And when their toddler grabbed the infected ear, the dog, already in constant pain anyway, reacted out of instinct. By not taking the time to properly care for their pet, these owners were in fact responsible for what happened to their child. And then blamed the dog. And probably out of ignorance or anger, or both, they had it killed. Their emotional response to what happened to their child as a result of their own neglect aside, I find this absolutely reprehensible. And the tragedy that happened to their dog when they chose to kill it instead of investigating further, as well as the tragedy to their child, was totally avoidable.

Unlike these owners, show your dog the same level of care and love you’d show your children. Become aware of the signs of ear infections, what causes them, and how to avoid them, taking dogs to get treatment when it seems like they have one.

Ear infections can be caused by any number of things. Wet ears not dried after swimming or bathing, a build up of ear wax, grass seeds and fox tails, untreated ear mites, using cotton tips to clean ears (which pushes things further into the ear), and growths in the ear canal, can all lead to ear infections. If your dog is scratching at his ears, rubbing them, holding his head to one side, or down, shaking his head, or if they look bloody or waxy or swollen, they should be checked out. And if he cries when his ears are touched, this is another sign of a potential ear infection.

When untreated ear infections progress deeper into the ear, the pain the dog is in increases sharply. The dog may hold his head as still as possible, and to one side. And opening his mouth, or touching his head, will cause him pain. Dogs can also become dizzy, with poor balance and coordination, when the infection progresses to the inner ear. Dogs may walk around in circles, and vomit.

Ear infections are also related to skin allergies, especially food hypersensitivity dermatitis and canine atopy. Dogs with these conditions often develop inflamed ears. The dog’s ears become very itchy, which creates an ‘itch-scratch-itch’ cycle that in turn creates scabs around the ear, hair loss, crustiness, and raw skin. The ear canals become filled with a brown wax.

Some dogs are also allergic to some ear medications. A common one is an antibiotic called neomycin, but can be any ear treatment products including cortisone, nystatin, chloramphenicol, thiabendazole, gentamicin, miconazole, and clortrimazole.

One thing of concern in dogs that are professionally groomed is the practice of plucking the hairs out of the dog’s ear. The serum which then comes out of their pores is an excellent breeding ground for bacteria, which is a common cause of ear infection. Vets generally don’t recommend you allow your dog’s ears to be plucked unless their is a good medical reason to do so. An example of a good medical reason is if there is a large mat of hair that is blocking air flow.

If the mats of hair are in the ear canal, they should be removed by a vet only. If they’re not, first soak the hair in a coat conditioner for a few minutes to soften it. Then, with your fingers, separate as much of the mat as possible. You may be able to untangle the rest of the mat with a comb, but more likely you’ll need scissors or a mat splitter. Be very careful if you’re using scissors. Using a comb, position it under the mat to protect the skin. Hold the scissors at right angles to the comb, and cut into the matted fur in narrow strips. Very gently, tease the mat out, and then comb out any snarls that are left. Regular grooming, with the right tools, will avoid mats forming in the first place.

Always check your dog’s ears after he’s been playing in long grasses. If you think there is a foxtail in his ear, take him to the vet’s and don’t try and get it out yourself. Fox tails can really damage the ear. If when you press gently on the ear canal he cries out in pain, there’s a good chance there’s a fox tail in there.

I’m from New York “the city that never sleeps” where things move at a fast pace, and things can get pretty hectic here. Sometimes you just have to say, hold everything, and take time out to regroup. Just like many of you who already have busy schedules, work, children, and after school activities to name a few.

You have to learn to organize your time to get the most out of every day and in the same instance you have to “Be Good To You”. The majority of our time is caught up in daily rituals. Get up, get the children off to school, go to work, come home and prepare dinner, get the children to bed then we get up and do it over and over again.

The thing is now you want to start your own business so that means your going to have to find a few extra hours in your week, besides the fact that we all need to unwind sometimes. So along with your regular schedule keep a few things in mind.

Exercise - It’s really pertinent that we learn to incorporate 20-30 minutes of exercise into our day atleast 3 times a week. Your metabolism will increase, energy level will rise and you will begin to feel like a brand new person. Walking, jogging, gardening and for some of us who just weren’t born with that exercise gene daily house cleaning will do the job.

Eat Healthy - Our eating habits can really make or break us. At this point in time I think all of us know what eating healthy means. When we begin to cut out the sugar and the fat we begin to see a significant change, but consult a physician because i’m not too big on the word “diet”. So what ever healthy means to you “just do it”.

Plan Your Business Hours - All I want to say is follow a schedule. Do you have an extra 20 hours a week? How about 15 or 10 spare hours that you can set aside and devote to your home internet business? You will need to be consistent to stay in the game. I don’t want you to get lazy on me. Treat your work like a flourishing business and it will become just that.

Hang Around Positive People - None of us can afford to waste time with negative influences. People that always have a problem or look at life through a pair of dark shaded glasses. Whether we believe it or not negative people leach off our energy when they don’t have enough of there own. I’m not saying totally avoid these people but keep in mind you can’t spend lots of time with these people. So for those of you who have friends or relatives who can’t seem to get their lives together, can’t seem to find the positive in their situations, or always try to turn your smile into a frown I say “run don’t walk”. They can and probably will hinder your progress. These people do need some positivity in their lives but just try to cut back on time spent with this type of character.

(NC)-During my term as Chair of the National Strategy on Community Safety and Crime Prevention, I have a visited cities in the United States, England and Belgium to discuss successful crime reduction strategies with local crime prevention officials. One thing that struck me was how similar their experiences were. In each city there was a serious crime problem, a focussed response and a substantial improvement in both the reality and the perception of safety.

Although there are no “one-size-fits-all” solutions, there are common elements at work, chief among them a willingness to involve the community in a meaningful way. As one Chief of Police observed, “I [used to think] that the police fought crime alone and that the community could only get in the way. Now we’ve got it right. We understand that in order to prevent crime and keep our community safe, we’ve got to involve the community as our partner.”

Jack Calhoun, President and CEO of the U.S. National Crime Prevention Council has identified six factors that were present in successful American city programs, even though actual strategies differed. They are:

1. A belief that all key municipal entities must play a role in cutting crime and violence. Schools, businesses, municipal government and social services must all work together.

2. The need to engage in specific, trackable actions. Cities need to have clear data on what the problems are, where they are and what’s causing them. They need to know what’s working and what isn’t in order to use resources effectively.

3. The courage to do business differently and to share power. Giving up “turf,” while difficult, is essential to working together.

4. A dual commitment to targeted enforcement and prevention - things like after school programs and mentoring. Law enforcement resources must be deployed consistently with broader crime prevention objectives.

5. A commitment to the long term. This is a challenge when some offer instant solutions, but helping young people build better lives doesn’t happen overnight.

6. And, as Calhoun puts it, “Clear, passionate, hands-on commitment from the leading policy-makers, prime among them the Mayor and the Chief of Police.”

Leadership; working together; identifying problems and then attacking them; measuring results; doing business differently; being tough on crime and equally tough on the causes of crime . . . these are the factors that we witness everyday in projects and communities throughout Canada. They produce positive changes here, just as they do in countries around the world.
