Options Before Gastric Bypass

May 31st, 2008

If you are intending to have a gastric bypass performed there are several steps you need to go through before the surgery. First off you’ll need to do some research for yourself and decide if a gastric bypass is for you. Then you’ll need to see your doctor.

Many doctors will insist on trying alternative methods of weight loss before moving on to the last resort as they call it. A gastric bypass surgery is permanent and an extreme form of weight loss. There are patients who undergo the surgery only to fail to lose their weight and keep it off. This can occur from cheating, falling back on old habits or a sedentary lifestyle. So if you really want to lose the weight by having a gastric bypass done you are going to have to make lifestyle changes in addition to the gastric bypass surgery.

There may be a two year period in which you work with your doctor before the surgery to make dietary and exercise changes. If you still cannot lose sufficient weight to be considered healthy then the doctor will move on to the next steps. You will discuss the various types of surgeries. You will have a variety of tests done on you, including blood gases and typing. Also you will have to get your gastric bypass surgery approved by your insurance. Some insurance companies may not approve the procedure if they feel you can lose weight by alternative means. That’s why its important to work with your doctor for up to two years and have a documented record of previous attempts to lose weight.

Also before your gastric bypass surgery you will have to visit with a psychiatrist for a mental competency evaluation and get approved. You will begin meetings with a nutritionist, preferably someone who has worked with other gastric bypass patients, about changing your diet and what to expect.

Conclave: Electing a New Pope

May 31st, 2008

Upon the death of the Pope, a monumental sequence of events unfolds, culminating in a process known as the conclave whereby a new Pope is elected to lead the Roman Catholic faith.

Beneath Michelangelo’s revered ceiling in the Sistine Chapel, the College of Cardinals, led by the Cardinal Camerlegno (Cardinal Chamberlain), Eduardo Martinez Somalo, begins the arduous process of selecting the pope’s successor. The Cardinalate currently consists of 117 cardinals from all over the world. In the conclave, an event enduring little change since the thirteenth century, the cardinals take an oath of secrecy, that if broken renders the offender automatically excommunicated from the church. There are no televisions, radios, or newspapers allowed inside the conclave.

The Cardinal Electors, almost all of whom were appointed by Pope John Paul II, will vote in a very thorough process of secret balloting where a two-thirds majority is needed to elect a new Pope. The College may vote up to four times a day, but if a new Pope has not been chosen by the third day, then the cardinals cease the voting process for a day of prayer and reflection. Following the day of prayer, the cardinals will commence for another seven votes, then another day of prayer. If after 12 days a pope has still not been elected, then the two-thirds majority vote is negated and a vote by simple majority is instated.

The first indication to the outside world that a new pope has been elected is the telling smoke signals. After each voting session a smoke signal is given by burning the ballots. If the voting session is inconclusive, straw is added to the burning ballots to produce black smoke. Conversely, white smoke signals that a new pope has been chosen.

In the past the College usually elects a cardinal that has been under consideration for some time. The two requirements for eligibility for the papacy are that the candidates must be a man and Catholic. Although any Catholic male is technically eligible, history shows that the candidates are always cardinals.

What is new in this upcoming papal election is the doctrine of Vatican II, which no longer requires cardinals to study Latin. Therefore, the issue of a language barrier is a potential problem that the College may face, since many of the cardinals for the first time in history, will not share a common language.

Pope John Paul II was elected in 1978 and has since been revered by Catholics as well as other Christian denominations, Jews, and Muslims for being a “Pope for the people.” More than any of his predecessors, Pope John Paul II traveled the world, visiting and praying with the people of the area. Many attribute the restoration of the Catholic Church to Pope John Paul II. Much speculation has occurred regarding the Pope’s successor. The outcome of the conclave is widely anticipated and only when we hear the Latin phrase “Habemus Papam” come from the dean of the cardinals will the world know who the next Pope will be.

Be Like Bill - Think!

May 30th, 2008

Twice a year, Bill Gates goes to a remote island hide-a-way for a week at a time. No, he’s not going for a fishing vacation; instead of rods, reels, and lures he takes market analyses, position reports, engineering reports, and opportunity papers. In solitude he reads and thinks and reads some more, writing notes in the margins then composing questions, thoughts, and his own positions that will impact the future of Microsoft and the entire technology industry for years to come.

Getting away from the daily pressures for an extended period of careful thought and consideration in his “Think Weeks” are the way Bill Gates works on the vision of the company, determines what new projects to pursue, and plans for the future. It is the same rigorous work and thought process that CEO’s of every business should pursue. Do you?

Now, I’m not suggesting that you should take a “Think Week” twice a year. Your business is much less complex than Microsoft. But, if your business is to remain competitive in this business environment and grow, you must take some think time. Maybe you need to take a “Think Hour”, a “Think Afternoon”, a “Think Day”, or even a “Think Weekend” with no telephones, no people, and no distractions. Go off onto that remote island (even if it is just behind your closed door with a “do not disturb” sign and a disconnected phone) to put the interruptions of the day-to-day far away. Have an agenda. Ask yourself some hard questions:

“Is the business on track to fulfilling my vision?”

“Is the growth rate or profit rate on target”

“If not - what can we do to improve it?”

“Where is my industry headed in the next five years and how do I position my business to take advantage of the changes?”

“What changes in our company culture, policies, strategies, and tactics are necessary and how do we implement them?”

If Bill Gates can get away from his multi-billion dollar business for two “Think Weeks” a year, you should be able to do it for two “Think Afternoons.” It will make a difference.

Leaders of Waiora and Other Top Network Marketing Companies Recognize a Balance of Offline and Onlin

May 30th, 2008

“To grow a large organization in network marketing, you must
have a strong Internet presence.” Myth or true? There have been
three types of distributors when it comes to the Internet, the
“guru’s”, the “newbies” and the “ostriches”.

In the past, as the Internet grew in popularity, there is no
question that those who were talented profited from marketing on
the Internet. Born were “Internet Guru’s”, those that had that
talent understood the capabilities of reaching millions of
people at pennies of a cost. They saw their volume bolster,
customers pouring in, but their success wasn’t necessarily
measured in organizational volume, but rather hits and visits on
their webpages. They became instantly popular within their own
company as others clamored to find out what they knew, their
secrets to their Internet success. Superstars were born
overnight.

Newbies are those distributors that knew a little about the
Internet, knew a little about marketing and knew a little about
this industry. They jumped on the bandwagon and started devoting
their time and energy to Internet marketing and they failed,
some miserably. Desperate distributors began paying hundreds and
thousands of dollars to “experts” of web marketing only to find
themselves in a pool of countless others trying to do the same
and competition became fierce. Frustration took over where
confidence once was home. Those that did manage to market feebly
on the Internet, learned how harsh the cyber world was, words
like “spam” no longer was meat in a can, and “flaming” was no
longer just about Banana’s Foster.

The Ostriches are the distributors that tried to stick their
head in the sand. Those rebellious distributors refused to
believe the Internet was here to stay, didn’t go near it, and
laughed at anyone who thought they could make a nickel from it.
They believed it was just a phase, there was no place for the
Internet in their business, and condemned anyone in their group
from using it. Ever try to tell someone that they couldn’t do
something?

What later became a realization is that the Internet should not
be used as a sole means to marketing your business, gathering
leads, and prospecting, but rather in conjunction with offline
techniques. Whether you are a Guru who remains faceless behind
websites and posts, or a Newbie that is frustrated with lack of
results, or even those Ostriches who hesitate to logon and would
rather get sand in their ears, each group must realize how they
have short changed their own business and themselves. After
coming to terms with this realization, next work on the
solution. If you recognize your strengths, you can work on your
weaknesses. Master those and you will be a powerful network
marketer. If you go to any top leader and ask them what they do
to grow a business, it will be a balanced combination of offline
and online marketing. If you are unbalanced, either only doing
offline or only doing online, you are missing out on so much
potential growth. If you are a Guru, you already know you can
build your business online. Now challenge yourself to pick up
your phone and call prospects, do a three-way, build rapport
with a voice, not an email. If you are a Newbie, you are more
likely to understand you need to be balanced, you started there.
Just go back to what you know works. Don’t abandon offline or
online, just work both in balance. For Ostriches, start by
seeing what others are out there doing in your company. Go to
www.google.com, or www.yahoo.com or even www.msn.com and type in
your Company’s name. See what pops up. Go explore. Get
comfortable.

Those that enjoy solid success in Network Marketing will be
masters at offline and online marketing. The bottom line is in
order to take your business to the next level, become teachable
to learn new techniques. Caution however against going
unbalanced yet again. Remain humble. If you are a Guru, then
seek the advice and help of some Ostriches in your group. Help
each other. That is the beauty of our business. When you work as
a team, together you can accomplish more.

I Don’t Want To Pay For Auto Insurance! What’s It For Anyway?

May 29th, 2008

There are approximately 20 various types of insurance policies available and auto, home, life and health top the charts.

The concept of insurance has been recorded to be first practiced as far back as 2nd and 3rd millennium B.C. Just about anything you think about or hold value too these days can be insured. Auto or vehicle insurance is one of the most common types of insurance and is a basic policy to protect you against losses incurred from car accidents, theft, vandalism and various other mishaps. Auto insurance can be purchased for different vehicles like cars and trucks as well as recreational items like motorbikes, boats and motor homes. In recent years the internet has been instrumental in helping people to know the various policies available to meet their needs and compare prices.

What’s auto insurance for anyway?

Auto insurance is basically a contract between you the customer or car owner and an insurance company. According to this contract you the customer agree to pay a certain amount of money or premium to the insurance company and the company agrees to payout any losses as defined in the policy.

The main items covered in auto insurance policies are:

1. Property: in case of damage or theft of a car the reimbursement is paid under the property coverage.

2. Liability: covers expenses incurred for bodily injury or property damage to the other person and or yourself.

3. Medical expense: medical coverage helps pay for treating injuries, rehabilitation and funeral expenses.

Most insurance policies are valid for six months to one year and need to be renewed before the policy expires to avoid gaps of coverage where you would be liable if something were to happen. Insurance companies will usually notify you by mail when it is time to renew your policy. Insurance companies charge a flat rate premium regardless of how much the vehicle is used. Some insurance companies also offer various types of discounts.

The Benefits of Auto Insurance:

In order to protect your assets and financial situation it is very important to purchase auto insurance, this is the main purpose of auto insurance. Auto insurance is not only important for the protection of your vehicle but also in most countries it is required mandatory by law.

It is very important to conduct a detailed study when buying auto insurance coverage because there are different types of policies with different benefits. Consult an expert before investing in any insurance to ensure you get the right type and best rates possible.

3 Ways You Can Live Like Oprah Today

May 29th, 2008

Who wouldn’t want to live like Oprah? She has billions of dollars to do with however she likes. She has luxurious estates in beautiful places. She has powerful and influential friends. She is adored by millions and has influence beyond comprehension. Yet, these things are not what inspired my article. What I am sharing may surprise you. So how do we mere mortals get to live like Oprah? Read on.

Like Oprah, you too can live a life of gratitude

I was incredibly moved to read about the “Legends who Lunch” event Oprah planned recently. Here is undisputedly one of the most influential and successful women today, planning an event to pay tribute to the “legends” who have contributed and paved the way for her and others. She identified 25 women “whose steps created a journey of no boundaries” for her generation. She wanted to “thank them, celebrate them, and rejoice in their spirit.” Then she invited 45 women who have benefited from these trail-blazers to come help honor these legends. What a show of gratitude!

Granted, anything that Oprah does gets press, so other hugely successful people may have made similar gestures that I didn’t hear about. But I honestly wonder if that is the case. I find her gesture genuine and inspiring.

Living a life of gratitude doesn’t mean throwing lavish parties, although that sounds like a mighty fine idea if you can pull it off. It means showing appreciation for what we have, whether it is a huge fortune, or a small windfall. It means saying thank you to others for what they have done for us, no matter how significant or trivial. It means thinking of others and being outward focused instead of thinking about “me, me, me” all the time.

So that’s the first way all of us can live like Oprah - feel grateful and appreciate everyday and everything that is good. I believe that one cannot be unhappy if one is truly grateful. Try it for yourself and see what happens. Follow Oprah’s example and keep a gratitude journal everyday. Write down at least five things you feel grateful for that day. Appreciate the simple things in life as well as the grand extravaganzas. I was told that the more grateful you are for what you have, the more the universe sends your way. It’s a very simple thing to do. Start today.

Like Oprah, you too can live a life of generosity Wayne Dyer said that “the measure of your life will not be in what you accumulate, but in what you give away.” And you don’t have to be filthy rich to be generous because aside from money, there are so many other things you can give away. Oprah is known for her generosity in the fabulous gifts she gives to her audience, and in her charity programs in Africa. But if you really pay attention, you’ll notice that she gives much more than that.

She generously shares her struggles and experiences, and in doing so, she gives others hope that they too can overcome whatever obstacles are in their way.

She generously shares her own life lessons, and in doing so, she teaches us wisdom.

She generously offers her affection. She appears to genuinely like her audience, her guests, and her staff. In relating to her, she made us more open to love and trust. What would happen with your relationships if you were more open and affectionate? How will people respond if you accepted them without judgment?

That’s the second way we all can live like Oprah - be generous with our time, our money, our talents, our support, our affection, and our love. What we send out returns to us tenfold. How can our lives not be improved by that?

Like Oprah, you too can live a life of evolution and growth

I admit that this is one of my values, so I get very excited about this. Life offers us lessons everyday and the only tuition we pay is our willingness to accept them. There is no better example of this in practice than Oprah’s “What I Know for Sure” articles that she writes. She takes everyday experiences and translates them into a lesson for how she wants to approach life. I don’t know if you have an opinion, but her life seems to be working pretty darn well to me.

This is the last secret I borrowed from Oprah - live life consciously. Allow and urge yourself to evolve and grow each day. Open your eyes to life’s lessons and live like Oprah. You could do worse in choosing a role model.

Does The Lion Test?

May 28th, 2008

Are you afraid of change? Are you afraid of trying new ideas to help grow your internet home business? A lot of people who start out in online business make the mistake of putting up a website and expect to make lots of sales without any revisions or alterations to the various component parts of their websites. Either they are ignorant of the fact that they should be making and testing different approaches or are just too lazy or afraid of change.

It’s really important to get the basics right whenever you run an internet home business or any business for that matter and it’s very important to your long term business success that you know your customers and where they came from. Ideally you also should know what pages they click through and visit on your website and where they leave your website.

If you have this data it will enable you to modify and test new approaches to your website design, your sales copy and your headlines. For example if your website has a very low click through rate you probably need to test new headlines and/or sales copy to draw prospects further into your website. This should bring you a higher click through rate, if not test again, and keep testing.

I came across an African proverb recently and it has some relevant lessons in it, that we can all apply to our day to day lives and our internet home businesses.

“Every morning in Africa, a gazelle awakens.
He has only one thought on his mind:
To be able to run faster than the fastest lion.
If he cannot, then he will be eaten.

Every morning in Africa a lion awakens.
He has only one thought on his mind:
To be able to run faster than the slowest gazelle.
If he cannot, he will die of hunger.

Whether you choose to be a gazelle or a lion is of no consequence.

It is enough to know that with the rising of the sun, you must run.
And you must run faster than you did yesterday or you will die.

This is the race of life.” -African Proverb

Which one would you choose to be? I would choose to be the lion, because the Lion can afford to fail repeatedly. There is always another opportunity to catch the gazelle another day, the lion can learn and try new tricks and techniques for hunting the gazelle, all it needs is to find one successful technique and it won’t go hungry.

The gazelle on the other hand, if it fails to elude capture will die! No second chances here I’m afraid.

You can apply the same principles to home business and internet marketing. View yourself as the Lion, if you fail with something, try, try again, all it takes is one successful method which you can repeat to get on the road to success.

There are many excellent tracking tools on the internet which allow you to track your prospects and sales. This will allow you to test new ideas or advertisements and know exactly whether the changes you are testing have been beneficial or unsuccessful.

Test, test and test again, until you find that winning formula and then try to beat it!

“If all else fails, perseverance prevails”. –unknown

Don’t treat your home business as a hobby or you will never achieve real success. Treat each day as a potentially life or death situation, it is in these moments that we have the greatest insight, motivation and determination to be successful and to succeed.

The Napoleon Dynamite Scandal Up In Idaho

May 28th, 2008

Things are putting a damper on the Festival of Light Parade in the mainly Mormon town of Preston, Idaho. November 25 was to be a joyous day when the extras who “stared” in Napoleon Dynamite where to be the headline attractions at the annual parade. The city fathers and merchants expected all 500 residents (includes horses) to come out to the parade. But now there is a damper on the event.

How sad that the former Chief of Police has been declared “a crooked cop” by the local court. He was sentenced to 1-5 years in whatever they call a jail up that way.

Even worse, the State of Idaho Attorney General is mad at the former Mayor of Preston. It seems the former mayor billed Preston twice for a $1300 expenditure on a trip to Washington, D.C. The AG thinks that was $1300 too much. You can’t fool our AG with such shenanigans. He cares about small-town idaho.

Being an old fuddy-duddy, I had never heard of Napoleon Dynamite. I went to: http://www2.foxsearchlight.com/napoleondynamite/.

I first learned that there is a fan club of over 150,000 members. It must be important, I thought.

I realized that the Foxsearchlight site had nothing to do with the network. It is the focus of the Fox Store. They reported that a DVD was or would soon be available for $19.95.

They also provided this useful information:

Actors: Jon Heder, Jon Gries, Aaron Ruell, Efren Ramirez, Tina Majorino, Haylie Duff, Diedrich Bader;

Director: Jared Hess

Never heard of ‘em!

Cancel the parade!
